I am not at all sure that one could say that the American Indians had or even were a unified culture. They had more in common with squatters than a nation. Either way, if we want to go down that path, then we may want to ask about their displacement of the Mounders.

We should also note that my claim is that cultures have a right to preserve themselves. This isn't a free pass. There may be times when the dominant culture must actively work at preserving itself from attack, both from enemies without and enemies within. This best describes our current situation.

Philip, if you wish to attack historical American values, traditions, customs, and symbols, then go for it. But rest assured that this description fits that of a deconstructionist... and an enemy within.

European culture was, in many ways, monolithic. Western, Christian (historically Catholic), and quite traditional in their values and political systems. Sure there were ethnic variations, but not so much within a nation. I must also remind you that the issue here is with the culture of a nation, not a continent made up of many nations.

You are more than welcome to recognize their cultures, but for better or worse (I choose the former), their culture is primarily a thing of the past. In those few instances where they want to maintain their heritage, they can, on a reservation. And as current events would have it, these can again become their own sovereign nations. We'll see. Until then, they reside within the boundaries of the victors. As harsh as it may sound, it is a matter of "tough luck."

The Texans did not want to learn the language. You are quite correct. But what happened? War. I would never deny that when cultures clash, the weaker must take a hard look at the odds and the majority must take a hard look at the costs. Either way, when the smoke clears, someone has won. This being said, if they want to mount an insurrection, let them. But know that the majority, as with the Mexicans, have a right to fight for preeminence.

Sorry if I don't buy into your cultural relativism, Moon. You must forgive me. I am a cultural supremacist, and rather proud of it.

You are correct to point out that this reasoning has, in the past, been used against groups such as the Irish and the Jews. How has this worked out. Well, the ADL, AIPAC, the Jews involved with early American Communism, ACLU, NAACP, and NOW have done more for the deconstruction of our culture than anyone could have ever imagined. Does this condemn any and all Jews living in this country? No. But it most certainly gives us reason to pause before condemning those who were skeptical.

The Irish... well, they turned out just fine. Not too many Irish organizations ought to transform American into some pluralistic nation of rival cultures and religions. Quite the contrary.

Sorry, Moon, but we disagree here. We disagree on many fronts. Have you considered calling my show or having others call my program? It would be interesting, and I always promise to be polite... even when we disagree.
